Construction and authorship

This iron sculpture is called “Dragon”, designed by sculptor Aureliano Aguiar and executed in 2009.

This sculpture stands out due to the detail of its execution, the beautiful symmetry of the whole and its realism in expression and greenish color.

The work, made of iron, took around three years to complete and was created by the artist Aureliano Aguiar and his work won the artistic prize “Utopia 2009” – Núcleo Português de Arte Fantástica.

However, the image of the dragon is often associated with the Suebi who, when they invaded the Iberian Peninsula in the 5th century, settled in the former Roman province of Galecia and founded a kingdom.

The city of Braga was chosen as its capital and assumed great political and religious prominence in a kingdom that very early converted to Christianity through the action of S. Martinho de Dume.

It is still visible today in the metropolitan character of its See, which is primate among the dioceses of the northwest of the peninsula.

The green dragon was one of the symbols of the Suebi and a representative figure of the ancestral Suebi domain that adorns Braga's urban space.

This sculpture is characterized by being controversial because it does not leave passers-by indifferent, there are those who appreciate it and those who despise it.
