Rua de São Marcos, in Braga

Casa dos Crivos is located on Rua de São Marcos, in the parish of São João do Souto, city of Braga, northern Portugal.

This Museum belongs to a housing typology that was very common in the 17th and 18th centuries and ended up becoming the only and rare building of its kind in the city.

The opening of the windows meant that residents observed absolute modesty in accordance with the conservative religiosity of the time in the city.

Casa dos Crivos is developed on a simple rectangular plan with a tendency towards verticality and towards making use of the area in which the building is located.

The facade is differentiated into three registers corresponding to three floors, the first being for commerce and the rest for housing. It is on these two floors that the building's facade becomes the most symbolic element typical of the time.
The Museum

In 1980, the City Council purchased the property, starting restoration work and transforming the interior to house a museum space.

In 1984, the “Braga Image History Museum” was opened in the Casa das Gelosias space and has temporary exhibition rooms and a small auditorium.
