The History of the Guimarães Bridge Cruise in Braga at Parque da Ponte
In 1570 an outbreak of plague devastated the city of Braga and the then archbishop D. Frei Bartolomeu dos Mártires ordered the construction of a hospital to treat the sick.
This building was built in Deveza do Arcebispo at the exit to Guimarães and to remember the Archbishop's action, the Braga City Council ordered a Cross to be placed next to the bridge over the Este river.
In 1594, a map of the city of Braga by Georg Bräun represents the cross next to the bridge at the exit to Guimarães and in 1616, close to the cross, the Chapel of São João Baptista was built.
In the 20th century, with the rectification of Avenida da Liberdade and the arrangement of Parque da Ponte, Cruzeiro was moved from its original location further E. to the yard it currently occupies, and has some sculptures from the demolished Convento dos Remédios added to the surroundings of the cruise.
