Construction of the 1° de Maio Stadium
The 1º de Maio stadium was designed by Travassos Valdez. Opened in 1950, the stadium is completely covered in granite and has a capacity for 30,000 people. Due to its construction period, it ends up being a symbol of the Estado Novo and its current name is not even the original: until 1974, this was the 28 de Maio Stadium.
For 5 decades it served as home to Sporting de Braga's senior team. Nowadays, Sporting de Braga plays at the Braga Municipal Stadium, built to host Euro 2004 and today one of the city's landmarks. However, the 1º de Maio stadium is still active with games for the city club's youth teams.
