Santa Bárbara Fountain (in Santa Bárbara Garden)

The fountain dates back to the 17th century and is topped by a statue of Saint Bárbara that once belonged to the Convento dos Remédios.

The old Convento dos Remédios (demolished at the beginning of the 20th century) was located where the Theatro Circo is located.

The Santa Bárbara Fountain (or Chafariz de Santa Bárbara), is an ornamental piece located right in Jardim de Santa Bárbara, in Braga.

In October 2008, acts of vandalism fractured the statue of Santa Bárbara at the top of the fountain into 78 fragments.
The Characteristics of the Santa Bárbara Fountain

This fountain is made up of two bowls, supported by a small staircase with three stairs surrounding the fountain (9 stairs in total), separated by a flower bed with plants, on top a stone hexagon with water, and at the top of the fountain a statuette of Santa Bárbara all in granite.
Restoration of the Santa Bárbara Fountain

The fountain was restored, but due to the fragility of the piece, it was considered that the sculpture needed favorable conditions for its physical and aesthetic stability, and therefore, the fountain was placed in the cloister of the old Pópulo Convent.

A replica was later ordered to be made in durable material and here it was placed in the Santa Bárbara fountain (which is no longer the original).

The main objectives of the restoration intervention were: to restore the total volume of the original piece, restoring unity to the sculpture and promoting its physical and chemical stability.
