The Church of São João do Souto is located in Largo de São João do Souto, parish of São João do Souto, city of Braga, northern Portugal.
The Construction of the Church of São João do Souto
The original church was founded in the 12th century and dates back to medieval times and was later donated to a couple.
The church of São João do Souto was built by Pedro Aurives and his wife Gelvira Midiz, who ended up donating it to the then archbishop, D. João Peculiar.
On July 12, 1161, Pedro Aurives and his wife Gelvira Midiz donated books, tools and other goods belonging to the church to Archbishop D. João Peculiar.
In the second half of the 18th century, also by the hands of another archbishop, D. Gaspar de Bragança, the church was rebuilt, taking its current form.
The construction of the church of São João do Souto dates back to the 17th-18th century in the Baroque style and it was in this church that Francisco Sanches was baptized.
In 1695, the slab was placed in the sacristy of the Confraria do Santíssimo Sacramento by the bricklayer Manuel Ribeiro.

The façade is delimited by pilaster corners and is topped by a counter-curved pediment, vase-shaped pinnacles and a cross.

Interior of the Church of São João do Souto
The interior also appears fully lined in both volumes, the nave has a high choir with an organ, a small altar niche, two pulpits and two side chapels.
On the internal side of the church, the gilt on the chapels, on the door valances, gilt on the pulpits and on the triumphal arch stand out, and in the main chapel the golden altarpiece stands out.
On the inside of the temple there are naturalistic decorations made with paintings, sumptuous lamps, a crafted organ, some tiles alluding to the image of Saint John the Baptist.

In the Chapel of São João do Souto, a plaque commemorating the Baptism of Francisco Sanches appears outside and the inscription reads: "On July 25, 1551, Francisco Sanches, the Great Physician and Philosopher of the Renaissance, was baptized in this Church”.
