The Gardens of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sameiro

Plantations on Monte do Sameiro began in 1926 and today the sanctuary has a huge area surrounded by scrubland with centuries-old trees such as pine trees, oaks, bushes, brambles, thorns and colorful flowers.

The Gardens of the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Sameiro in Braga are always being remodeled with the planting of seasonal flowers to make them more beautiful and attractive to pilgrims and tourists.

The Temple of Sameiro has a large space made up of 3 picnic parks: next to the cross opened in 1953 that ends the long avenue of Nossa Senhora do Sameiro is the first, more hidden park surrounded by an enclosure with many trees, the second park is located further down in front of the cave, and the third next to a lake on the way to the exit of the Sanctuary where we find benches, tables and lots of shade.

In this space we can see well-kept and beautiful gardens, notice the details of the geometric gardens and the leafy trees and sit at the stone tables to have a picnic or simply have a few moments of tranquility.

In the area close to the Hotel João Paulo II in the center we find a Monumental Cross made in stone with a shallow landing and a staircase with 5 stairs and at the top a cross (it was inaugurated in 1953) that stands out along the entire long avenue of Nossa Senhora do Sameiro surrounded by a forest of rich vegetation with centuries-old trees (oaks, chestnuts, pine trees, bushes), stone benches and tables, an iron sculpture and among the trees hidden the Image of Our Lady in marble surrounded by 2 fountains.

On the edge of the Apostolic Center of Sameiro/Hotel João Paulo II we find the headquarters of the apostolic life “Heralds of the Gospel”.

The central divider in front of the statues of the Holy Doctors of the Church (S. Cyril of Alexandria, S. Anthony of Lisbon, S. Bernard of Clairvaux, S. Afonso Maria de Ligório) has flower beds along its entire length.

On the north side is the statue of Pope Pius IX who was beatified by John Paul II on September 3, 2000.

On the right side, the House of the Rector of the Sanctuary, the Maia Restaurant, the Casa das Estampas and nearby 4 statues of angels (Saint Gabriel, Saint Michael, Saint Raphael and the Guardian Angel of Portugal) on the edge of a garden with roses, and higher up a bust of the founder of the Sanctuary, Father Martinho António Pereira da Silva.

In front of the Basilica of Sameiro there is a Chapel divided into four rooms: The Chapel of Ex-votos, the Chapel of São Bento, the Chapel of São Judas Tadeu and the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament.

In this place, pilgrims light candles, make promises and leave their wax objects or photographs in a room through the grace achieved.

On the east side we can find a road where blue hydrangeas stand out, large trees, many bushes, pine trees and walls decorated with lawn, green plants and bathrooms for pilgrims.

In this small chapel we find the Image of Our Lady of Sameiro dressed in a blue cloak and at her feet surrounded by angels' heads where the faithful pray their prayers to obtain or thank graces granted.

On the back side of the Maia Restaurant there is a long avenue made up of panels with decorative tiles alluding to the Mysteries of the Rosary surrounded by manicured gardens and trees making the walk more pure and mysterious.

The decorative tiles refer to the Mysteries of the Rosary: the joyful mysteries (Monday and Saturday), the painful mysteries (Tuesday and Friday), the luminous mysteries (Thursday) and the glorious mysteries (Wednesday and Sunday).

From the Basilica, going down a few steps, we find the cave of Our Lady of Lourdes where her image stands out surrounded by an iron roof where devotees can say their prayers.
