Largo São João do Souto in Braga
This monument is located in front of the garden and Largo São João do Souto, in the historic center, city of Braga, northern Portugal.
This bronze sculpture shows Francisco Sánchez and granite plaques with inscriptions honoring his work.
The monument was made by the sculptor Salvador Barata Feyo and was placed in this square because he was baptized here in the Church of São João do Souto. Francisco Sanches (1551-1623) was a Portuguese philosopher, mathematician and doctor and was considered a skeptical philosopher.
Sanches was born in the territory belonging to the diocese of Braga, son of Jewish parents, and was baptized in the Church of São João do Souto in Braga.
He left Portugal at the age of 12 and went to Bordeaux, where he enrolled and attended the famous Guyana school, which was an intense focus of intellectual renewal.
In 1573 he enrolled at the Faculty of Medicine in Montpellier and, two years later, he took up residence in Toulouse, where he remained until the end of his life. He taught medicine and was considered one of the most illustrious teachers at this university.
The city of Braga honored him with a statue and gave his name to a school that is currently called “Escola Básica Dr. Francisco Sanches” which is located on Rua do Tax, or Travessa do Taxa in Braga.
