Esporões, in Braga
The Santa Marta das Cortiças Viewpoint is located in Santa Marta das Cortiças, parish of Esporões, City of Braga, Northern Portugal.
On Monte de Santa Marta there is a small chapel called Santa Marta das Cortiças and presents a place with historical importance that is still kept underground, archaeological finds (dating back to the 8th century BC), traces of a pre-Roman fort that was later Christianized (5th and 6th centuries) and the Palace of the Kingdom of the Suevi that attest to the occupation of this place for more than a millennium.
During the time of Archbishop Dom Diogo de Sousa (1505-1532) there was a hermitage dedicated to Santa Marta, today called Santa Marta das Cortiças.
In Monte da Falperra, this religious devotion had been practiced for many years not only to Santa Marta but also to Santa Maria Madalena, and Dom Diogo de Sousa was one of the benefactors highlighted by the works he carried out in Falperra.
In Monte da Falperra, the then Archbishop Dom Diogo de Sousa ordered the remodeling of a small chapel that already existed in that place, ordering gaps to be made, for windows and painting in the Main Chapel, for the pavement in the outão do Cruzeiro, for a chalice and book in that primitive church.
Currently, the Pilgrimage continues to be in honor of the two Saints: “Santa Marta” and “Santa Maria Madalena” and is celebrated between the 22nd and 29th of July every year.
