The History of the Monastery of the Visitation of Santa Maria in Braga (Visitandina Nuns).
On the initiative of the Marquesa de Monfalim, together with other distinguished ladies from Porto who wanted a good school to which they could entrust the education of their daughters, a request was made to the Mosteiro da Visitação de Lisboa for a foundation in Porto.
This foundation took place on October 23, 1879 with Sisters from the Lisbon Monastery, with Sister Mariana Josefa da Costa as Superior.
This community also had to disperse in 1910 to monasteries of the Order in Spain, France, Belgium and other countries.
In 1931, with the Spanish civil war, the Sisters returned to Portugal and settled in Real, a parish in Braga, in a house that was not fit to be a monastery and is currently the Colégio de Nossa Senhora das Graças.
In the 1950s, the Sisters acquired a building on Rua Irmãos Roby, then owned by FNAT, (the current INATEL) which, after many works, was transformed into the Monastery where the community moved on June 23, 1956.
