Rua do Raio, in Braga

Museu do Traje Dr. Gonçalo Sampaio, is located on Rua do Raio, in the city of Braga, north of Portugal.

Cultural space dedicated to the ethnography of Baixo Minho, where it is possible to visit the characteristic 19th century costumes of the Braga district on permanent display.

The Costume Museum, through its exhibitions, aims to share with the general public the ethnographic traditions of “Baixo Minho”, and in particular, the costumes of our people at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century.

In this Museum, the various costumes collected in the district of Braga are on display, depending on the different geographical areas.

While the scarf served women, the field worker wore a cap that fit the head and provided comfort and did not hinder movement.

The straw hat, like clothing, was also made by the skilled hands of women.

In the second half of the 19th century, the city of Braga stood out for its hat industry, located mainly in the parish of São Víctor.

The so-called Braguês hat, with a high crown and a brim about seven centimeters wide, then gained notoriety, the use of which became widespread throughout Minho.

There was no farmer who, especially on market days, did not wear his hat made by the renowned industry in Braga.

Minho folkloric groups displayed the Braguês hat more frequently than the cap, although there are some that are now including this in the clothing they display.

The braguês hat constitutes precisely one of the accessories of the Minho costume that has been the subject of adulteration, especially among folkloric groups in the Alto Minho region.

The Minho people invariably appear in party attire, the men in Sunday suits and the women in their characteristic “Vianesa costume”.
