National Monument since 1910 of what remains of the city's old castle
To the east, the keep is located on Rua do Castelo in Braga, where the main remains of the castle erected under the reign of D. Dinis.
With a square plan, in the Gothic style, it stands approximately thirty meters high, divided internally into three floors.
At the top, a semi-detached window and boulders at the apexes, at the top a crown of battlements, on the tower and on the west elevation, the coat of arms of D. Dinis.
These houses were intended for housing for the rural gentry and were important symbols of feudal power.
In Portuguese castles, the keep is taller than the others, allowing a wide view of the surroundings and the perimeter of the wall, and the castle's defenders could use the battlements crowning the top of the tower as a direct firing base with range across the entire perimeter of the castle.
This is all that remains of the Braga castle that formed a medieval fortress: 12 meters long and around 30 meters high, the granite tower is crowned with battlements and angles and on one of the fronts a shield of D. Dinis.
