History of the University of Minho
 
This University was founded in 1973 and received its first students in the 1975/1976 academic year.

Today, the University is recognized for the competence and quality of its teachers, the excellence of its research, its wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate training offers and its high level of interaction with other institutions.

For these reasons, UMinho is an important national reference and a recognized partner on the European and global scene.

The University's organizational structure is flexible and favorable to innovation and interdisciplinarity, enhancing the exploration of emerging areas of research.

The Organic Teaching and Research Units – Schools and Institutes – are the basic structures of the University: Schools of Architecture, Science, Health Sciences, Law, Economics and Management, Engineering, Psychology and Higher School of Nursing, and Institutes of Social Sciences, Education and Literature and Human Sciences.

UMinho is a research university, committed to the knowledge valorization chain, having numerous successful partnerships in research, cultural and socioeconomic development projects.

Internationalization represents a strong commitment and international activities are very intense, not only within the EU and PALOP countries, but also with several other countries, on several continents.
Infrastructures or support services for students and teachers
 
UMinho has a set of infrastructures and support services for students and teaching, which respond to the most diverse needs of students.

From libraries and computer labs, to access to the wireless broadband network and reprography, banks, bookstores, bars, canteens and restaurants at very affordable prices, at UMinho students will find everything they need from 8am to 10pm.

The three university camps, one in Braga and two in Guimarães, provide more than three dozen libraries, including two general libraries (in Braga and Guimarães) with around 300,000 books and 600 reading places and several specialized libraries (bringing together more than 100,000 books) and access to around 17,000 scientific journals accessible through the b-on Digital Library); a Classical Library (with more than 300,000 books from the years 1450 to 1900). They also have three sports pavilions, three canteens (4000 meals/hour), snack bar, two grills, a restaurant and 14 bars.

The number of beds available in the four residences is quite high (847 beds in Braga and 542 in Guimarães), these spaces having all the necessary conditions for the academic success and well-being of students, namely broadband wireless Internet, dining rooms, bars and canteens, study and social rooms, laundry, etc.

UMinho ensures the timely payment of scholarships to all students, with scholarship recipients given priority in residences.

Also noteworthy are the cultural, associative and sporting activities carried out by students through associations, musical, theater and poetry groups, among others.

The Academic Association ensures the organization of various academic events, with emphasis on the Welcome Week for new students and the Enterro da Gata week.

Medical and psychological support is also available, as well as access to more than 50 sports.
